A chemical hazard refers to the risks that surround using a chemical. in the workplace, we find two types of chemical hazards: health hazards and physicochemical hazards. the term chemical health hazard refers to the properties of a chemical which can result in acute or chronic health issues. physicochemical hazards pose a risk to workers. These chemicals are used to do the following: treat patients (e.g., antineoplastic drugs, aerosolized medications, anesthetic gases) clean, disinfect and sterilize work surfaces (e.g., phenolics, quaternary ammonium compounds, bleach) and medical supplies and instruments (e.g., ethylene oxide, glutaraldehyde) as a fixative for tissue specimens.

Examples of a toxic chemical hazard: benzene, bromine, powdered inks and or pigments, sodium azide, formaldehyde. irritants materials that cause harm by irritating the eyes and or skin, and cause allergic reactions, drowsiness, lack of coordination and or organ damage. examples of an irritant: ammonia, poison ivy, sulfur dioxide.
